The meadow was, as expected, boring. Everything was flat, no obstacles or hidden trenches to exploring any fun. The large flat of land was an explosion of green, but then again, Zitao was never one for uniformity. He made his own splash of colour, a deep red that spread with every movement of the dying creature before him. The colour soaked his paws and dried thick onto the blades of grass pushed carelessly out of the way. The creature before him struggled under his gaze, previously soft fur soaked with blood. A simple rabbit, yes, but the pickings the past few weeks had been slim. All the larger animals preferred to remain hidden in the forest, cowering in the shadows. They were far too difficult to find in the state that he was in, his mind teetering on the edge from weeks without killing. So it had come to this, this pathetic little bunny that was quivering before him, its skin peeled back to expose muscle and bone. It looked up at him, searching for mercy in the yellow eyes and finding nothing but want. He wanted to kill this animal, to make it sing loud and long.
Tao had never liked small animals. They were too delicate, too quick to succumb to death that he couldn't drag it out. It's squeals, luckily, were high and frantic, and had done their job well enough. Tao's eyes were glazed over, tongue rolling out to the side as he savored the high squeaks. It sent a shudder of pleasure through his body, one that nothing else could produce.
The screams eventually subsided into gurgles, sputtering out to let silence reclaim the land. Becoming lucid again, he gave a small growl of protest. It had been over too fast. He could stay like that all day, lost in the haze that others' pain brought him. The rabbits life had been sufficient, however, at least for now. It had sated his bloodlust enough that the hunger was replaced with guilt, gnawing at the insides of his stomach. With clenched teeth, he made his way through the grass until he stumbled on one of the many pools placed through the meadow, rinsing off what he could of the blood on his paws and face. It wasn't that noticeable, the dark fur hiding the colour well, but even the idea of walking around covered in blood was enough to at least wash some of it off. He never bothered going back to the carcasses; there was no point. It's not that he wasn't hungry - not that the measly little rabbit could have been a substantial meal - but there was always some dark part of his mind that liked the idea of someone else finding it. How they would react, what thoughts would cross their mind. What kind of monster would do this? They would say. Even the idea made Tao giddy with excitement, although he knew he shouldn't be. He had, on occasion, stayed hidden and waited to see if anyone found their loved ones. Whatever was left of them anyways. It was not often, but when they did stumble on the body, chaos was sure to set in. There were yells, tears, and hysterics. Sometimes watching this made him grin, his tail swishing lightly against the bushes around him. Emotional pain was often almost as good as physical, and to inflict it on so many at once was utterly delightful. Other times, watching the scene killed him. Pups crying for their mothers, their faces pressed against the bloodied fur to hid the tears. It made his heart clench, stubbornly pitying those who would have to live the rest of their lives without whoever it was. Mother, child, friend, it was all the same. Gone forever just for a few moments of some stranger's intoxication.
Tao had given up on waiting around. The euphoria was not enough to risk the soul crushing guilt that could happen, and he could never guarantee which he was going to feel. He looked into the pool of water, slightly tinted red with blood. "You are a monster" he whispered to his reflection, watching it mirror the words.
"Yes" it seemed to murmur back, his brain fuzzy from lack of sleep and the emotional recoil that happened ever so often. "And I always will be.
But so will you"
(ooc: wow ok this is... ok. One thing about me is I am bad at ending posts. oops.)
